This is a sponsored post, but just so we’re clear, I genuinely STAN Barritt’s Ginger Beer. Listen, just because it’s the dead of winter and there’s, like, a polar vortex or whatever, doesn’t mean that you can’t sip like it’s a sizzling summer day! Plus an adult beverage warms the heart and soul anyway, right? One of my all time favorite drinks is the “mule.” Moscow, Kentucky, Mexican, they’re all amazing! The make it or break it key ingredient in any mule is the ginger beer. I’ve tried more than my fair share of ginger beers out there. Some are too sweet, others not nearly enough of a ginger kick. Barritt’s Bermuda Stone Ginger Beer checks all the boxes, bringing balance with spice and sweetness. I also love that they have both diet and regular variations, as well as use 100% organic pure cane sugar. *Fun fact* my first cocktail I ever created on a large scale (for my Aunt & Uncle’s wedding) needed a solid ginger beer, and you KNOW we went with Barritt’s. For more info you can visit www.bermudasgingerbeer.com It’s also no secret that I love me some Mexican agave spirits. I wanted to make a variation of the mule that hadn’t been so widely mass produced, so I went with a nice smoky Mezcal for this drink. I was also recently inspired by my friend’s Mexico City vacation and her countless posts of stunning sunsets. Throw in the fact it’s blood orange season and you’ll be able to see how my latest cocktail creation came to be. MEXICAN SUNSET MULE
(makes one cocktail) 2 oz mezcal Juice of one medium lime ¾ oz blood orange juice ¾ oz grapefruit juice 4 oz Barritt's Ginger Beer Fresh mint (for garnish) Blood orange wheel (for garnish) In a collins glass over ice, build in given order. Garnish with slice of blood orange and mint. Cocktail handcrafted by Dan Magro, author of Suck It Up: Extraordinary Cocktails for Everyday People. Slightly smoky, spicy, bright and sweet. Each sip takes you on a wild ride, as the blood orange and grapefruit play so nicely with the mezcal and Barritt’s. You could use a copper tumbler if you want to, but I went with a collins glass, because LOOK AT THAT BEAUTIFUL COLOR!

I was lucky to discover a hangover prevention product called Morning Recovery! If you watched the video you can see my journey from skeptic to believer. So as you can imagine, I was so excited when they asked to collaborate on a cocktail series featuring their powerful product. Enter the without consequence series. I'm pairing Morning Recovery with some of your favorite spirits to create a cocktail so indulgent, and prepped + ready to prevent any hangover shenanigans.
This deep citrus cocktail is a close relative of the margarita, with herbaceous garden notes from thyme and orange pith. The morning recovery adds subtle peach notes and some warmth contributed via citrus bitters. If you prefer things super sweet, you can adjust the agave nectar to your liking. Of course the Morning Recovery will ensure your adult beverage is loaded with beneficial vitamins and nutrients so you’re ready to face the next day, no question. Now let that tequila flow! TEQUILA WITHOUT CONSEQUENCE (makes one cocktail) 1.5 oz blanco tequila 2 oz lime juice 1 bottle (3.4 oz) of Morning Recovery 1 oz blood orange juice 1/2 oz agave nectar Orange bitters Fresh thyme (for garnish) Dehydrated blood orange wheel (optional) Put all ingredients except thyme and bitters into a shaker. Add ice, and shake vigorously. Strain into a salt-rimmed glass over two large ice cubes. Add two dashes of orange bitters and garnish with a blackberry skewer and dehydrated blood orange wheel. Cocktail handcrafted by Dan Magro, author of Suck It Up: Extraordinary Cocktails for Everyday People. My worst fear has come true–– I’m stranded on a desert island! Well actually, now I won’t have to go to work, AND can sleep as long as I want, so maybe the glass is half full after all? Speaking of glasses, here’s what would be in mine for Craftr’s 5 Drinks on a Desert Island Series.

This vibrant and effervescent cocktail packs a powerful flavor-punch that will hit your tastebuds hard, but not your head the next morning. The earthy notes of the bourbon intertwine perfectly with the bright acidy of lemon and blackberry, as your nose is tickled with champagne and herbaceous basil. If you lean toward the sweeter tooth side of life, you can adjust the honey to your liking. Of course the Morning Recovery will ensure your adult beverage is loaded with beneficial vitamins and nutrients so you’re ready to face the next day, no question! I guess that makes me an author? This whole experience has been so surreal. If you had spoken to me last year at this time and told me I'd have a book out, I would have thought you were absolutely insane. Thank you to everyone who believed in me along the way, my friends and family, and friends who have become family. You have helped me in more ways than you'll ever know. So what are you WAITING FOR? You can purchase the book on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and many other retailers. If you want to save some trees and get the iPad version, you can buy that from Apple here!
If you make any drinks in the book, don't forget to tag me on social @danmagro! CHEERS! I have been a HUGE fan of Hanson of Sonoma's organic vodkas ever since my squirrel friend Kayla introduced me a few birthdays ago. Who wouldn't love a gluten free, small batch, family owned spirit, especially one local to California? As an Italian from Philly, family is everything, and my grandparents were small business owners, I was so excited to learn all about the Hanson family and how this beautiful product came to be. It's part of my DNA to shop local, small business, so this was a no-brainer. In the past I typically reached for their espresso-infused vodka but had NO idea how many other infusions they offered. So naturally I was BEYOND flattered (😍😍😍😍) when they reached out to see if I'd be interested in creating a cocktail with their ginger infused firewater! It was such a joy to inaugurate their Guest Mixologist series, and I can only wait to see who else jumps in soon. I'll post the recipe below, but make sure you check out the feature on their page here! For one serving: 2 oz Hanson of Sonoma Organic Ginger Vodka 1 oz lime juice 1 oz blood orange juice 1 tbsp fresh rough chopped ginger 1/2 oz agave nectar orange bitters ginger root, fresh thyme, for garnish Place the chopped ginger and Hanson of Sonoma Organic Ginger Vodka into a glass and muddle until blended. Add lime juice, blood orange juice, agave and transfer to a cocktail shaker. Add ice, and shake vigorously. Strain into a coupe glass and add three shakes of orange bitters. Garnish with a slice of fresh ginger and thyme. Check out other Hanson of Sonoma products here. |
